Cafe Isan - The lesser known area of Thailand
This may come as a surprise as it was for me, Isan is the name of the north east region of Thailand. It has no coastline, which Thailand is known for and for this fact you get many visiting this area. However they have a history/ culture on their own and its known to be a melting pot for people from Laos and Cambodia.
Cafe Isan is one restaurant that caught me by surprise, located in JLT with a stunning view of the waterfront the interiors are equally sensational. Simple setting by luxury and gives a definitely feel of home. Green plants hanging, colorful tables and chairs. On the tables you have cards and board games where you can play and relax and soak in your special moment. I am totally loving the it.
Started off with a natural tender coconut and a Orange Thai Ice tea. Really loved the Coconut drink and the Thai Ice tea was nice and as a first time I would have it but would try other flavours next time. How can you go to a Thai restaurant and not have their Tom Yum soup, out of the available selection we took the seafood and man that was one heck of a Soup. Full of flavours, rich Thai ingredients and the special chili mix of the house. The smell and aromatic flavours here driving our tastebuds to another level. We ordered the coconut shrimp, which was battered in coconut mix and the mango dip that comes with it is delicious, perfectly balances the taste. Next we got the fried beef strips, which is an Isan specialty and man that was terrific. This was topped with crispy garlic and comes with a chili sauce. This is a definite much try here.
For the main we got the chicken Pad thai, which was a bit different on the usual presentation, but the dish was a hit, loved it to the core. The next one, was something I have not tried before and I was really impressed by this. Its called the Hustler, a traditional Thai street food, which is a mix of fried Thai basil, green beans, red onions, mixed with light soy sauce. Whooow. the spice levels was over the roof. Amazing, this was one dish I will never forget to have again, such splendid was this dish.
As always, you cannot leave a Thai place with out checking out their Mango and sticky rice. The mango was perfectly ripe and the rice was a bit too sticky for me, even after pouring the coconut milk it was a bit too sticky, but the overall taste was good.
I loved the simplicity of this place, the head Chef Neu was a talent. There was passion in her and she loved what she did. This place makes you feel at home, the price is reasonable, good quantities and the super service. If you come here, you cannot go wrong. You will naturally fall in love with this place.
